Reblog as text.
It did feel like you were attacking his stance on simply being healthy too,
Why? The only thing I was attacking was his argument about what constituted health, which was largely based on what a person looked like.
It’s a big deal because showing responsibility to one’s self as an individual helps bring up the standards for everyone else. Also, things like weight gain have become more of a conversational issue as of late, so there is a larger chance of someone coming to you and commenting on your weight and body type than someone commenting on your current relationship status out of the blue.
Now, I don’t think that all cases show an extreme like you give as an example. If you begin to show signs of unhealthy weight gain, I’m sure your friends would comment on it ad try to help you in the same sense that they would if you were in an unhealthy relationship. However, in the case of strangers coming and commenting on such things, a relationship status isn’t a very apparent thing, unlike weight. Culture right now is leaning incredibly self-righteous, and so people seem to feel the need to attack others in public in what they feel is almost an intervention of sorts. This is sad, but the best thing to do with those people is state the facts and wear thick skin and hope that this will help promote knowledge and social change.
I think that the reason why people feel more comfortable commenting on someone’s weight instead of someone’s relationship is, in part because obesity is more apparent, but also in part because people just find obesity to be offensive to look at. And I think the faux-scientific “fat = unhealthy” panic over obesity in America has emboldened many people to put the concern troll gloss on their issues with how people look, because it allows them to state their appearance-based opinions in such a way that keeps at bay (marginally) the appearance of their being shallow or just assholes.
I’m not really sure who here is supposed to have a thicker skin, but my general position on, well, everything is that people who are wrong should be corrected, and people who are being unfairly attacked by misinformed jerks should be defended.
