Would it be that hard to put actual veggies on pizza? This is my eternal question with school lunch standards. Kids will eat vegetables if you serve them prepared in tasty ways.

Vegetables are expensive. Seriously. Unless it’s corn or soybeans, the subsidies the government gives to farmers make vegetables really expensive. It wouldn’t be cost effective for a lot of schools (especially poorer (read: black and brown) ones) to put anything more than processed food-meats and iceberg lettuce on the tables for their lunches. the USDA and the Obama Administration need to do way more than what they’re doing now. This is just my opinion. They need to get in there and fight like mad to help these kids.

Also, if you’ve seen the pizza they give these kids, it’s not made there at the school. It’s basically like those 99 cent “tony’s” pizzas from the grocery store. It’s just heated up at the schools and served. Vegetables probably wouldn’t last that freezing, shipping, or reheating process.

That’s why we need to do more to subsidize and improve the quality of school lunches. My mom runs a school where 60% of her students are on free and reduced lunches. Those kids usually don’t get packed lunches, and they depend on what they get at school to be filling, nutritious, and satisfying. For some of them, school meals are the only meals they get all day long. Pizza and iceberg lettuce do not cut it. Catering to those who manufacture the garbage that most students are subjected to only makes the problem worse.
