A Deadlier Threat Than Terrorism

Be very scared. A killer stalks the U.S. public claiming, by recent estimates, 45,000 lives annually or one dead American about every 10 minutes …. This shadowy killer is the lack of adequate health care in the U.S. Researchers from Harvard Medical School found in late 2009 that 45,000 people die unnecessarily every year due to lack of health insurance.

Yesterday, sitting cozily in my chemotherapy chair getting a drip-infusion of drugs that was paid for 100% by my insurance, I overheard the following conversation:

“Oh, Ms. ____ is here for chemo?  Tell her we can’t see her any more, she doesn’t have insurance.”

I tried to forget this conversation pretty quickly, but it stuck with me.  A doctor TURNED AWAY a patient with cancer for lack of medical insurance?

I honestly don’t know what to say about this, except for all of the article above.

Coming from the UK and living in Denmark where we have a national health service I am always blown away to hear stuff like this. How can this happen in a country like the USA? I guess it all comes down to making sure certain people get a fat paycheck. Sure the NHS in Europe has its good and bad points but over all its an AMAZING service to have. I lost my Mum to Cancer, from the day we found out to the sad day she lost her battle she was looked after and cared for by hard working Doctors and Nurses…. and we didn’t have to pay a cent. I could not imagine going through that AND having to worry about huge bills or being turned away from hospital. :/
