“Why would we care about a group of white British people fighting colonialism? That’s pretty much the narrative we get now from films: white people fight racism (in the past)! white people fight colonialism (in the past)! white people wear old-timey costumes and have adventures! The only way we get to see white people doing bad things is if white people are also fighting them so the white audience can feel like the heroic white people and not have to deal with feeling guilty about stuff that’s in the past and they didn’t even do!! Meanwhile, all the non-white people in the past get to be one dimensional victims, because actual oppressed people fighting oppression for themselves - which is primarily how that went down isn’t the story a white audience wants to see.”
