Yet another, “Don’t dress like that,” or “Don’t go to that party,” or “Don’t walk by yourself after dark,” or “Don’t leave your drink unattended” dismissal of violence against women. If someone chooses to threaten you, it’s obviously your fault for being in the wrong place on the internet. Even if most of the people discussing the harassment they’ve received write for major publications or reputable blogs. Even if anywhere on the internet can quickly become an unsafe space if only one person who thinks this sort of behavior is okay enters the conversation. The only thing any instance of sexual harassment or assault—online or in real life—have in common is the presence of a jackhole who thinks that they are completely justified in doing this to another human being.
