“Bad teachers can really damage students and are very very difficult to fire. Bad CEOs could put a company under but are fairly easy to fire. Good teachers (working for maybe 20 years with 30 students each year) improve the lives of 600 young people. Good CEOs create jobs, wealth, and empower many more people than 600 people. How many lives did Steve Jobs improve?”

Bad teachers can do a lot of damage and are harder to fire than CEOs, but you’re going to lose a lot more money due to a bad CEO, no matter how quickly you shuttle him/her out of the position, than you will on a bad teacher, no matter how long he/she sticks around.

Good teachers may only improve the lives of 600, and a good CEO might be able to empower tens of thousands, but the CEO wouldn’t be able to do his/her job to begin with, if at some point he/she hadn’t encountered at least a few good teachers. And even if the CEO were brilliant, without a large, educated work force, he/she isn’t going to be able to accomplish that much all on their lonesome.
