When I was working in the corporate world there was a lot of anti-natural hair sentiment & even commentary because as long as it was couched in terms like “professional appearance” they can say whatever they like & it isn’t illegal. However, once I went to work for the feds where their policies do cover hair I never heard another word about natural hair. That doesn’t mean don’t still have their biases, they just can’t directly express them. Wearing my hair in twists, no one will say a word. Wearing it out as a wash & go? They have feelings & questions & side eye. Nothing directly negative, but certainly negative things would be implied by some people. And the hair touching. OMFG, the hair touching. But the two white women on the floor with curly hair could do whatever they wanted & no one so much as batted an eye.
Yes this issue bothers me severely because I wonder if for the sake of getting a job I will have to relax my hair again which I just don’t want to do. It is so damn frustrating that my hair is a freaking political issue. Seriously? I can’t look like myself without facing problems and looks. After I big chopped in August and I began to wear my little TWA I would just get these looks from people who just felt like it was their duty to inform me that they didn’t like my hair. I love my natural hair. I think it’s flipping awesome. It is so damn sad to me that people really think that only straight hair looks good or professional.
