“If the US Government was a family, they would be making $58,000 a year, they spend $75,000 a year & have $327,000 in credit card debt. They are currently proposing BIG spending cuts to reduce their spending to $72,000 a year. These are the actual proportions of the federal budget & debt, reduced to a level that we can understand.”—

Fortunately our government isn’t a family, its a fucking government.
Also Dave Ramsey is a douchebag, my dad tried to push his budget bullshit onto me a few years ago. The guy basically says you have to be a good christian and his budget help tips are only applicable to middle class people.
I completely agree with your assessment of Dave Ramsey. However, I always like being able to put the numbers into things that are more understandable. I don’t know about you, but I have a hard time wrapping my mind around $1,000,000. I can’t even fathom what a billion or a trillion is.
That being said, putting this in terms of family spending brings up other options. It’s not as if cutting back your spending is your only way out. Especially if you’ve got $300,000 on a credit card. Unless you’re moving your family into a cardboard box, you’re probably not going to be able to pay that off. However, if you can increase income, you can work to pay down your debt. And if you’re America, you’ve got an awful lot of resources to tap to increase your income.
So just like some people might get a second job—or a new job—to help finance their spending habits, we should be considering the same.
