The boy in the photos in Thomas King, one of my favourite writers. 

People tend to not realize just how big an impact residential schools had on our elders, and on their children and grandchildren, who usually grow up not knowing their language, culture, or traditional spiritualities. 

But hey, Stephan Harper issued an official apology so we should all just, like, get over it, right?

In the US, they were called “boarding schools”. The US government has never even considered apologizing for them, and just as in Canada and Australia, they were centers of white colonial rape culture; that is to say, the culture of white people raping children of color with impunity and de facto legal approval.

ETA: In 1973, there were 60,000 Native American children enrolled in boarding schools in the US.
