but like, how many young women do we have to watch crash and burn (and die, in a lot of cases) before we start thinking maybe it’s not about their inherent personality flaws but the fucked up way the people (men) who make up the mass media sexualize, commodify, and exploit young women and girls, e s p e c i a l l y when they can go ahead and prop up institutional racism at the same time? “but she-” yeah, you’re right, she does, but whoever SHE is this time, she’s also not even 25 and has a whooooole team of stylists, label people, lawyers, network execs, and her own goddamn family who are overwhelmingly men who don’t give a shit about what happens to her or to girls just like her can we just talk about that even once
not in favor of portraying white women as the helplessly naive victims of the patriarchy when they think it’s cool to go up and smack a black woman’s buttocks like they’re playing the bongos, and that’s not getting into the whole goddamn fucked-up landscape of white artists appropriating twerking etc. If white feminism could be trusted to talk about white women as agents in racism, I’d be more in favor of this approach, but every single goddamn time this shit happens, a crowd of white feminists start in with the “oh no she’s under (some arbitrary age, usually much older than the point where WoC are held accountable for their actions, but well within the category of grownass adult) and therefore she’s just a wide-eyed puppet of men, suggesting otherwise means you’re being complicit in her exploitation and inevitable breakdown!” She is actively perpetuating sexualized racism against black women specifically. We can talk about her as a victim of sexism and misogyny while still holding her accountable as an individual for her racism, which white women are still responsible for whether it benefits white men or not.
I also feel really uncomfortable equating the “crash and burn (and die)” things being referred to here, the things that actually kill young famous women, with doing some racist bullshit
like, there’s a big difference between being self-destructive and being destructive toward others so can we not draw a direct comparison between, say, young famous women who die of drug overdoses and young famous women who use WoC as accessories/appropriate other cultures as a calculated career move
and there’s also a big difference between these “teams” turning a blind eye to or encouraging self-destructive behavior as a means of maintaining control of their employer, and those same people encouraging racist bullshit because it’s good for business
