American Muslims have been a part of U.S. history since its inception - arriving voluntarily as immigrants or involuntarily as slaves and detainees, fighting on behalf of the United States in every war the country has ever waged (including the War of Independence), and contributing to the culture and traditions of the country in more ways than any article could count. But the September 11th attacks stirred up anti-Muslim xenophobia, prompting civil liberties violations that have, at times, appeared to threaten both the security of American Muslims and the United States’ commitment to religious inclusion.1528
