Y’all. The internet.
So after yesterdays post, a few of you tweeted an reblogged because the power of the internet is real as fuck.
Within 3 or so hours, I received an email from the communication specialist at Kate Spade. They’re so sorry. She never got my email. KS doesn’t hate the browns. They want to talk about it. Blah blah.
I had things to do other than talk shit about Kate Spade on the internet, so I emailed her and told her I would holler today.
Last night I was thinking about it and I realized that Kate Spade is probably really eager to make this go away, which I guess is valid. That post was reblogged/RT all over the internet. I had a sketchy but mildly legit online news organization email me. People aren’t here for Kate Spade’s trash ass customer service or racism. I’d imagine this woman that called me had a pretty busy day yesterday.
So, back to the phone call.
I called this woman today and she was great. Very apologetic. She is saddened for my experience, blah blah blaaaah. I explained to her how disheartening this whole situation was. How I felt they were only calling because of the bad PR. How in 2013 this shouldn’t be a conversation we are having. How her bullshit store made me feel like a lesser person and how I will NEVER be going back into it. She listened, said mmmhmmm at the right times. Apologized some more. She didn’t make excuses. She accepted responsibility for her company’s employees and really did a top notch PRing job. She explained how this is NOT how KS operates. but then, she basically took a dump in my cereal.
She offered me $300 and a free styling appointment. At the store where I just said I would not be entering ever again because of the way they made me feel. The store where I was “pretty woman”-ed.
There was a huge opportunity for Kate Spade to make this better, and now I feel insulted. You think pushing $300 and a bullshit styling appointment in my direction and hoping this will go away, and hey….I GET that. But NO. NO. That’s not enough. I do not want a gift card that will not even cover one of your questionably made handbags, from a brand that made me feel like a lesser person. They could have lied to me and told me they were going to start a diversity training program for employees. Anything to show me that they really get it. But they don’t and that it what sucks.
Now don’t get me wrong, the woman I spoke to was really great. I appreciate her reaching out. I told her I would follow up later this week because I needed to think and get my bearings about this whole annoying situation.
I just wish her boss or whoever authorized this insulting offer would do better. I have no idea what would make this right, but $300, and a free stlying appointment isn’t it.
Again, Kate Spade. Do Better.
