This is an excerpt from her post (which I’ve mentioned several times now on Gradient Lair) Allow Me To Reintroduce Myself; My Name is FEMINISM.
I completely agree with her. Thus, I am able to like or dislike celebrities, and critique their art and public personas through a womanist perspective without disregarding their entire humanity if their feminism does not match some arbitrary percentage that has been assigned. This is how I am able to tweet/write about them, and recognize the importance of media in shaping society, but also realize that there is a WHOLE hell of a lot of WORK to do that is not about the famous “anti-feminists” that people treat Michelle Obama, Rihanna and Beyoncé as, for example.
Thus, when some feminists (DAILY) expect me to argue on Twitter over whether Beyoncé is feminist enough, they’ll have to mind me as I apply my attention elsewhere. I find that useless…some arbitrary tug of war. Just once I would like to see these types discuss the racism, sexism, misogynoir and the politics of respectability used to minimize her, and all Black women. Just once.
