watching “eyes on the prize” (which i saw at the “In it to win it” school!) from the beginning of the series (we watched the fifth episode, i think, at the school)—and this white segregationist said something that just sort of clicked everything in place for me. he said he didn’t want the “n*ggers to control the making of the law that controls me.”
it just clicked in why all these white folks are currently out of control with their gun buying and their conspiracy theories and their hyper nationalism etc etc etc.
it wouldn’t matter if obama made slavery completely legal again. the fact that there is a black man controlling the making of the law that controls them—THAT is the problem.
it all comes back to *power*. and who is allowed to have power over white people. and for far too many white people—somebody having control over there lives is something that they can’t even imagine. somebody besides them having *control over the laws that control them* is cause for revolt.
suddenly the way the suburbs act about what is going on in detroit makes sense to me. (detroit, for all the problems, still controls things like the water, a lot of the land, etc and that enrages the suburbs)…
