Bollywood, Nollywood are all producing so many movies about and for people of color. This is great and I would suggest checking some of them out. When I studied in Kumasi Nollywood was everywhere. But so was Hollywood.
Nollywood does not get much global attention. When Bollywood does it’s often followed by “But aren’t those movies so weird!”.
Hollywood is global, Hollywood is in every country in the world. Hollywood makes the movies known as ‘art’ (and dribble) and gives awards to mostly white people.
That means the entire world, made mostly of people of color, get to see movies that posit white as default, white as beautiful, white as courageous and white as having stories worth telling. In Hollywood if a person of color is acting in it then they’re mosty there to support the white character not to have their own stories told.
DId you know that England colonized 25% of the world? That 25% of the world was told that no no, white people will take it (resources, lives) from here because it’s their right as white people?
And that movies that show white people and only cares about the stories of white people reinforce the attitudes learnt by colonized peoples and their colonizers. When you’re told “Well, white people just can’t relate to moves about people of color” you’re saying that white people shouldn’t need to empathize with people of color.
That’s fucked up, Hollywood. That’s real fucked up.
