I just can’t. Elizabeth Wurtzel is so aggressively ignorant of everything outside her upper class, Ivy League-educated, coastal elite circle, it’s not even worth engaging on this entire thing.
Please keep telling us about how there are no stay-at-home mothers in small towns or anywhere except New York and LA living on a shoe string budget, and continue ignoring the fact that many, many women—even at the time of The Feminine Mystique—labored without any choice in the matter and still without the ability to gain economic independence. It’s far more interesting to agonize over the labor choices of rich white ladies, and not because of the things that facilitate their lifestyles—including exploitatively cheap labor of largely non-white mothers who clean their homes, cook their meals, and raise their children—but because it might hurt another rich, white lady like yourself.
Ugh. Like…I can’t even care about this. It’s so clueless. It’s like reading the ravings of a spoiled 8-year-old girl who is mad because no one will buy her a pony.
