“I am a working woman out in the world, but I still live with my parents half the time. I’ve been taking this long, stuttering period of moving out. … I feel like I’m constantly asking them to please stay out of my work life, but also to please bring me soup. It’s this weird moment where you just don’t have a sense of what age-appropriate behavior is because there is no age-appropriate behavior.”

Lena Dunham Addresses Criticism Aimed At ‘Girls’ : NPR

Does this sound more like a 16-year-old than a 26-year-old to anyone else? “Get out of my room! But can I have $20 to go see a movie with my friends?”

I just don’t understand this. I’m not that much older than she is (I’m 28), and I haven’t lived with my parents in over 10 years, and I feel very strongly that living in my parents’ home (especially when I have the means) and expecting them to take care of me on some level is incredibly age inappropriate.

I think her belief, though, that there is no such thing as age-appropriate behavior explains a lot about her show, and why when I’ve watched it, I’ve felt like I was watching a show about people who must be at least 10 years younger than I am when, lo and behold, the girl who writes the show is only 2 years younger than I am. Like, I get why you call it Girls, because not a one of you even has the foggiest clue what it means to be a grown-up. And even when I was 23 and didn’t always feel like a grown-up, I still fucking acted like one.

I think it’s embarrassing, frankly, that this person is being called the voice of my generation. Embarrassing.
