White privilege is Mark Wahlberg. The post about his racist acts, including throwing rocks at black people and beating a Vietnamese man until he was blind in one eye, have been making the rounds and white people have said the following: it was a mistake, he’s a different man now, the past is the past, we all do stupid things when we’re teens, let it go, etc.
White privilege is caring more about this one man’s reputation instead of the many people he hurt. Even though he’s a racist scumbag- he is still the victim because we’re judging him for what he did do instead of ignoring it like white people want us to.
I can understand if takes someone a while to see institutional power and racism, what I can’t understand is how even when racist acts like Wahlberg’s are pointed out, even when there’s no denying what he did, even when it’s as straight forward as possible- he shouted racial slurs and he attacked people, he is still given the benefit of the doubt as a person.
White privilege is always being forgiven.
I didn’t even know these things about him. Probably because people said, “But it’s Mark Wahlberg…”
