Twenty-eight year olf Michael Laney was a father, a son, and a boyfriend. His girlfriend and mother of their two children, Sarah Raymey says “He loved his dad, his boys loved him, they loved him.”
Laney was shot to death outside his mother’s house on Crestview Lane in West Charlotte Monday night. And now his family is left to pick up the pieces.
Raymey says, “Next month, my son is going to be two, and its supposed to be a joyous occasion for me celebrating his second birthday, but now what am I supposed to do.”
Michael’s family and friends sat right here in the living room, only feet away from where everything was happening on the front porch. Laney’s cousin Fredrick Laney watched the whole thing. He says police tackled his cousin Michael in the front yard, and thats when he says police went too far.
Laney says, “His gun came out, no hesitation, he ran up on the porch, had his knee on Michael Laney’s neck, and put the gun to his head, shoving it.” Police say Michael Laney was involved in an armed rovbbery outside a convenience store on Beatties Ford Road in June.
Officers caught up with him Monday, and say he pulled a gun on an officer during the struggle. But his family says that is not true. Laney says, “I opened the door, and watched my cousin lay there with blood coming from his face, with no gun in his hand.”http://www.foxcharlotte.com/news/local/Armed-Robbery-Suspects-Family-Speaks-out-161302675.html
In reference to the bolded section: Michael is only being called a suspect in that robbery because he drives a red scooter. Anyone who lives in Charlotte knows that particularly in lower-income neighborhoods, there are a hundred and one dudes on red scooters.
I’ll keep you updated as more comes out. It’s nice to finally see a news story that’s at least semi-accurate. Thank you everyone who tweeted, reblogged, or facebooked local Charlotte affiliates and asked them to get the family’s side of the story.
