So, it’s not good that I found my employee harassment prevention course offensive, right? As in, the videos used were reinforcing negative cultural stereotypes about people from Middle Eastern cultures and their treatment of women. AND when there was a horrible sexist joke used in one video, when it ended and cut back to the panel of supposed HR “professionals,” they were laughing at the joke. Let me see if I can remember…
Why is a beer better than a woman?
a. A beer doesn’t get jealous when you grab another beer.
b. A frigid beer is a good thing.
c. [Can’t remember exactly. Something about drinking beer and enjoying it in bed. Who does that, anyway?]
d. You can share a beer with your friends.[Cut to panel of experts chuckling.]
I also don’t think it was necessary to go through ALL FOUR offensive parts of the joke to get the point across. At least the HR person conducting the training said, when the panel laughed, “That’s not funny.” Gee, ya think?
I honestly don’t believe I’ve been offended the entire time I’ve been here as much as I was today. I pointed out the offensive parts on the training review sheet. We’ll see if they contact me. They’re probably flagging my employee file right now with a special “Easily Offended” sticker.
I’d get the same sticker in mine. Yikes.
